Dirty Filters - How they affect your air conditioning system
Dirty filters can cause a variety of issues for the air conditioning system and the surrounding environment such as:
- Poor air quality
- Restricting air flow
- Higher running costs
- Collection of moisture which can cause mould growth
- Possible collapse of ductwork in a ducted air conditioning system
We recommend you have a routine maintenance carried out on your system every 12 months. In between your regular maintenance we also recommend that as a minimum you clean your filters on a quarterly basis – the best way to remember is to clean your filters on the 1st day of every new season!
Cleaning your filters is a very easy process and should only take a few minutes. Whether you have a ducted air conditioning system or a split air conditioning system the process is very much the same.
With a ducted system you will find the filter located in the return air grille (an eggcrate type grill in your ceiling) – slide the filter frame out and simply hose it off outside with your garden tap, tap it out gently, allow to dry and then put back into the return air grille. For a split type system you will find the filter inside the front panel of the indoor unit. lift the panel, remove the filters, hose off, allow to dry and place back into the machine.
Running a system with clean filters will help do what they are designed to do and that is catch dust and other pollutants such as pollen and bacteria, helping to maintain good air quality.
It will assist with better energy consumption. Clean filters have been shown to lower the running costs by approximately 5% - 15%.
